Into the Fire

Charlie is all about the potty these days.

He always wants to sit on it. He's also been really good about telling us when he needs a new diaper, which is usually while he's in the process of filling one or shortly after the process has been completed. We think he might be potty trainable at this point, so we're going to try to go diaperless starting tomorrow night. I'm scared, but prepared with a layer of towels to cover the floor and plenty of clean, dry pants. We're going to Target tonight to pick up some big boy undies. I'm just not willing to go the pull-up route, knowing what I know from working in market research. I've also been inspired by my European-raised co-workers who had their kids potty trained by 18 months, because that's just how they do it over there. One of them is only a month older than Charlie. They don't have pull-ups in a lot of other countries, nor do they have diapers that fit babies over 25 pounds. Potty training is a necessity, and if they can do it, so can we. Why lean on products that companies have developed only to prolong the diaper-wearing years? P&G and Kimberly Clark have gotten plenty of $$, thank you very much.

My random-but-related thought of the day: What is with the "potty learning" people? Does it just make them feel better about themselves to use a different term than the rest of us?

  1. Interesting that you mention your European co-workers. We were concerned that FireGirl might be too young for potty training, when our pedi told us that in most other countries they start it at the 1st birthday. Interesting...

Re: potty "learning" - IDK. I've heard people say they don't like it because you "train" your dog, so they don't want to use the same word with their kid, but that makes no sense to me. Work sends me to "training" and I don't get all offended by it, thinking they're calling me a dog.
IMHO, some people are just overly sensitive.

  2. Good Luck! I agree with you about the pull-ups thing. I have to admit we bought them though only b/c they were easier to change him into this summer when we went swimming to places or when he needs his diaper changed in public. He is probably going to catch on really quick if he already tells you he needs a diaper.
